Meet Ms. Erin: A Teacher With a Unique Path to the Classroom

Published on 21 November 2024 at 13:52

Ms. Erin, a history teacher at Lyons Community School, brings a wealth of life experience to her classroom, having worked in industries ranging from construction to marketing before entering education. Now in her third year at Lyons, she reflects on her diverse career journey and the lessons that have shaped her teaching style.

Ms. Erin says her favorite part of teaching is working with the students. "You teach me so much, and you're fun to work with," she said. She also values Lyons' strong sense of community, which she finds distinct from other schools she has worked at.

Evolving Roles in Education

When asked how her role has changed over the years, Ms. Erin noted, "I got to teach a lot of MAP [Make A Plan] classes. Initially, I was teaching baking; now I’m doing cosmetology. This year, I’m more responsible for faculty, so I’m evolving." Her adaptability reflects the breadth of skills she brings to Lyons, making her a dynamic presence in the school.

For anyone considering a teaching career, Ms. Erin advises patience. "If you don’t have patience, maybe teaching isn’t for you," she said, adding that the first two years can be especially challenging as new teachers adjust to their roles.

A Career Built on Diverse Experiences

Before becoming a teacher, Ms. Erin held a wide range of jobs. She owned a restaurant in Puerto Rico, ran a limousine company, worked in construction, managed auto detailing and parts companies, and even marketed for an agricultural firm. These experiences, she explained, taught her problemsolving, organization, and communication skills, all of which she applies in her teaching today.

She attributes her decision to leave the business world to her values. "I am more of a socialist than a capitalist," she said. "If somebody is hungry, I’m going to feed them." While this mindset didn’t align well with the demands of running a business, it perfectly complements her role as an educator.

Ms. Erin’s decision to teach also stems from a desire to give students the support she lacked during her own high school years. "Part of the reason I’m teaching high school is because I want to be the teacher I needed in high school but didn’t have," she shared.

 Shaping a Teacher’s Perspective

Her past roles have clearly influenced her teaching. Running a restaurant honed her organizational and time management skills, while marketing sharpened her ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups. Even construction and auto detailing taught her to think critically and adapt to challenges—skills that benefit her students every day.

Ms. Erin’s journey illustrates how varied experiences can enrich a teaching career, providing unique insights and skills to connect with students. At Lyons, she continues to embody the values of patience, resilience, and dedication, inspiring her students and colleagues alike.
